THE SCARFER

22" x 30" linoleum block print

metallic black and pewter ink on paper

I was just a kid, practically a baby, when my dad worked as a scarfer at Youngstown Sheet & Tube. I remember one day when he described his work to my brother and me. He said that when the steel came out from the molds, it carried imperfections from the process along with it—scraps of molten steel that clung to its sides. It was his job to “shoot sparks at the steel to clean it off.”

In “The Scarfer,” I imagined my young father as an angel, a celestial knight hovering above us all, riding along his sparks as we slept soundly on top of the valley. The lines that fueled his instrument became his wings in the glow of the molten steel. He transcended the dust and fire that made our reality, taking away the imperfections in an imperfect world.
